(RSBCIHI | Riverside, CA) — Riverside-San Bernardino County Indian Health Inc. (RSBCIHI) will observe Indigenous Milk Medicine Week with a three-day event series. These events will take place from August 12–14, 2025 across three clinic locations. The gatherings are part of World Breastfeeding Week.
Each event will support and honor Indigenous breastfeeding families. This week highlights a traditional practice that nurtures both cultural identity and family health.
Event Schedule (12 PM – 3 PM):
- Tuesday, August 12 – Morongo Clinic (Quad Area)
- Wednesday, August 13 – Soboba Clinic (Center Lobby Area)
- Thursday, August 14 – San Manuel Clinic (Building A Lobby)
Families who attend will receive a free lunch and family portraits. These events are designed to be calm, respectful, and welcoming. They offer space to reflect on the strength and care that comes through breastfeeding in Native communities.
Breastfeeding in Indigenous cultures is more than nutrition. It is a form of medicine. It connects generations and carries both emotional and physical strength. “Milk medicine” is a reminder that breast milk is both healing and deeply rooted in culture.
Today, many Native families still face barriers to breastfeeding. These include limited access to culturally informed care and unequal health resources. Indigenous Milk Medicine Week brings attention to these issues. It also offers a chance to support each other and share stories.
This event is part of RSBCIHI’s work to support families early. It reflects a wider goal—to improve maternal and child health through culturally sensitive care.
“Breastfeeding is a sacred tradition,” said one RSBCIHI nurse. “It strengthens our families and keeps us connected to who we are.”
All community members are welcome to attend. Whether you are a parent, elder, or friend, your presence is meaningful.
